Why it is important to simplify

After a very busy year, I decided that I needed a way to stay on track and minimise feelings of exhaustion. To do this, I would focus on one word this year. That word is SIMPLIFY.

SimplifyI can apply this word to all areas of my life and it allows me to look at situations from a different perspective, by asking:
Can this be simplified?

Can simplifying cause confusion?

Some people associate the word simplify with 'dumbing down'.

It is far from that. The word enables me to prepare my verbal or written message so that it can be easily understood. In an information overload society that is a benefit to everyone.

Being able to simplify has a domino effect in other areas of life – everything from juggling a busy schedule to developing healthy routines (and sticking to them).

How can focusing on one word help?

Focusing on the word simplify helps to:

  • Eliminate 'fluff that causes confusion
  • Increase productivity as there is a clear objective
  • Approach solutions to problems from different perspectives

And an added bonus is that it minimises feelings of frustration and overwhelm that occur when we don't break down complex tasks into simpler, more manageable ones.

How can one word help you achieve your goals?

The word simplify fits in well with SMARTIE goals. It enables you to develop a clear path to achieving your goals and in turn, knowing how you will be feeling when you do.

Do you have a word that you are focusing on this year? How is it helping you to achieve your goals? If you would like to share your word for the year, leave it in the comments section below.
